Artists Gathering at White Rock

Saturday 26 July 2008

Detailed briefing for registered participants

This is an outing for amateur artists to walk into and sojourn at White Rock for 'en plein air' sketching, drawing or photography.

Local artist, Michael Einersen, will be our artistic mentor on this excursion. Michael has long visited and painted landscapes of the area - see Journey Through White Rock and Beyond.

White Rock, north of the Flinders Peak complex, is in the region where the Flinders Peak - Greenbank - Karawatha biodiversity corridor turns to the east as the lowland portion of the corridor.

This area has great significance for the local Ugarapul People. We will have the opportunity to gain some understanding of these indigenous cultural values and be briefed on appropriate protocols.

The walk each way is about 3.5km, most of which is level or a moderate rising grade. There is a short, steep climb of several hundred metres distance at the end on the approach to White Rock itself. The walk should be about an hour each way, with the return being a slightly different route, partly along the ridge which has extensive views to the city and nearby suburbs.

It is important for attendees to be moderately fit, well-prepared and self-sufficient for food, water, refreshments and your preferred artists materials.

This walk is brought to you by Save Our Riverfront Bushland (SORB), under the auspices of Oxley Creek Catchment Association (OCCA) as part of the Peaks to Points Festival. Your gold coin donation is appreciated.

WHAT TO BRING:

Essential:

  • sturdy walking shoes, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, appropriate clothing) and wet weather gear;
  • personal basic first aid (antiseptic cream for scratches, bandaids, saline wash, etc.)
  • water (need to be self sufficient for the day - no water available on site);
  • backpack, shoulder bag or similar for carrying all art materials, seating (folding stool or cushion);
  • art media preferably would be confined to drawing and sketching materials, although water colour may be possible if you think about the logistics and constraints of drying of your work. Oil painting obviously would be impracticable for these reasons.
  • REMEMBER, you are carrying everything for nearly 8km of walking (return trip).

Provisions:

  • Morning tea
  • Energy snacks, scroggin
  • Lunch

Optional:

  • Camera
  • Maps
  • Binoculars

OTHER INFORMATION
For your information, we have negotiated details for this walk with Ipswich City Council and ICC has issued a recreation licence for this event. Guidelines and requirements, which are as you would expect for a natural area, will be included in the briefing on the morning. The route traverses Ipswich's "White Rock Conservation Estate".

If you need to withdraw for any reason, please notify me as soon as possible (contact details in signature block).

WET WEATHER PLAN
In the event of inclement weather on the day, please contact me on the morning (say from 6:30am) to confirm whether cancellation is foreshadowed. At this stage (24 July), it appears that rain and showers should have cleared.
